Architecture

The overall Industrial Edge and hence the Mendix on Edge architecture is grouped into 3 main layers which represent a standard customer setup:

  • Cloud level
  • Factory level
  • Field level

The entry point of Mendix on Edge is the Industrial Edge Product Catalogue (Cloud level): users need to purchase Mendix Device Licenses here. By finalizing the order, the licenses will automatically appear in the Library section of your IE Hub, the centralized app repository of your hub. From the IE Hub, you can allocate and deallocate licenses to IEM instances. The usage of licenses is reported in summary to the IE Hub - like with other applications.

Using Mendix Studio Pro (running on a local dev machine) and the Industrial Edge Plugin you can upload your developed Mendix app to either the IE Hub (in order to share the app to multiple IEMs or to other hubs with Hub-to-Hub Transfer) or your local factory IEM from where you can install to multiple devices.

The containerized applications are executed on IEDs, directly on the shopfloor. Piggybacking on existing applications allows you to use already connected machine data.
