System – Overview

The Industrial Edge Ecosystem provides a vertical integration of the shop floor to the cloud services. The Edge App and Edge Device management features are provided on a secured platform on all levels.

The main components of Industrial Edge are:

Industrial Edge Management (IEM)	App and Edge Device management for Industrial Edge
Industrial Edge Device (IED)	Decentral Industrial Edge computing unit providing the runtime environment for Industrial Edge Apps
Industrial Edge App Publisher (IEAP)	Fat client running on the desktop for creating and publishing Industrial Edge Apps
Industrial Edge App	Self-contained entity based on Docker images and docker-compose containing functionality for intelligent processing of automation data.

All IE-related services operated by Siemens and provided to the customer are running on infrastructure provided by a certified cloud provider (AWS). The European cloud tenants (Industrial Edge Hub, Industrial Edge Management as SaaS) are deployed in the AWS datacenter in Frankfurt.

Productive and pre-productive (also known as testing or quality assurance) environments are running in own cloud tenants to ensure that they are isolated from each other.

The data stored for the services is backed-up on a daily basis for seven days, and on a weekly basis for four weeks.
